Melt or lock? How to choose the right setting spray for your skin, your finish and your day.

Which setting spray is yours? Dry skin: MAC Fix+. Glow: ONE/SIZE Powder Melt. Everyday: Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless. Long days: L'Oréal Infallible. Oily skin or on camera: ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn

Let's be real. Most of us bought our first setting spray because somebody said, "Girl, you need a setting spray." Nobody said which one. Nobody said why. So we grabbed whatever everybody was raving about and figured a spray is a spray.

It's not. Not to me.

When I said on Threads that setting sprays aren't all doing the same thing, the comments told me I wasn't the only one who'd been confused. You spray, and somehow your makeup looks worse. Or it looks beautiful at 8 a.m. and has packed its bags by lunch. The spray wasn't bad. You just gave it the wrong assignment.

Quick answer: which setting spray should you use?

If your powder looks like powder, you want a melt spray. If your makeup has to survive heat, sweat or a long day, you want a lock spray.

  • Dry skin or a powdery finish: MAC Fix+ or ONE/SIZE Powder Melt

  • Everyday polish that lasts: Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless

  • Long days, heat and humidity: L'Oréal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Mist

  • Oily skin, sweat-prone days, on stage or on camera: ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn

Melt or lock: the two jobs a setting spray can do

Every setting spray lives somewhere between two jobs.

Melt or lock: melt sprays like MAC Fix+ and ONE/SIZE Powder Melt take the powder out; lock sprays like L'Oréal Infallible and ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn are built to stay put

Melt sprays take the powder out of a powdery finish. They make makeup look like skin again, bring the glow back and soften everything.

Lock sprays are about staying power. Heat, sweat, humidity, a fourteen-hour day. They are not there to make you pretty. They are there to make sure you stay pretty.

Some do a little of both. None of them do everything. And that's fine, once you know which job you're hiring for.

Setting spray comparison: five sprays, five different jobs

These are the five I reach for, from most melt to most lock. This isn't a ranking. Think of it as a matchmaker.

Setting spray

Its job

Best for

MAC Fix+

Melt + Refresh

Dry skin, powder that looks like powder

ONE/SIZE Powder Melt Glass Setting Spray

Melt + Glow

Glow without the powdered look

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray

Polished + Lasting

Everyday wear, most skin types

L'Oréal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Mist

Serious Long Wear

Long days, heat, humidity

ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray

Maximum Lock

Oily skin, sweat-prone days, on stage or on camera

MAC Fix+: Melt + Refresh

MAC Fix+ setting spray, Melt + Refresh, at the melt end of the spectrum

This is the one I use when the powder is sitting there looking like powder. A few mists and it settles into the skin. It refreshes, it softens, and it's great on dry skin. Just don't ask it to hold your face together through a cookout.

MAC calls it alcohol-free and hydrating, and it works before makeup, after makeup or as a midday refresh.

ONE/SIZE Powder Melt: Melt + Glow

ONE/SIZE Powder Melt Glass Setting Spray, Melt + Glow

For when we need the powder but refuse to look powdered. It melts everything into the complexion and gives you your glow back.

ONE/SIZE says it melts and sets powder into a glass-like finish, with up to 12 hours of wear.

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless: Polished + Lasting

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, Polished + Lasting, in the middle of the spectrum

Pretty, and make it last. Because we're grown, not laminated. This is my everyday middle ground: it holds without making you look flat or overly matte.

Charlotte Tilbury says it's hydrating and waterproof, with up to 16 hours of wear.

L'Oréal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Mist: Serious Long Wear

L'Oréal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Mist, Serious Long Wear

More lock than melt, at a drugstore price. Long days, heat, humidity. It's a workhorse.

L'Oréal says it gives up to 36 hours of transfer-, sweat- and smudge-resistant wear.

ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn: Maximum Lock

ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray, Maximum Lock, at the lock end of the spectrum

Matte, waterproof, and not playing with you. For oily skin, sweaty days, and any day your makeup simply does not have permission to move.

ONE/SIZE says it keeps makeup waterproof, transfer-proof and sweat-proof for up to 16 hours.

How I choose a setting spray

Start with your skin: dry vs. oily

If I've already got dry skin and then I powder it, the last thing I need is to spray something on top that makes me look even drier. I did not do all that skincare to end up looking like a powdered mannequin. Dry skin usually wants melt. Oily skin usually wants lock. Combination skin gets to pick based on the day, which brings me to...

Think about the assignment

Going to work, sitting through a Zoom call and meeting somebody for dinner is one assignment. A July wedding in DC where you're outside taking pictures at 4 p.m.? Ma'am. That is an entirely different assignment. So is a full conference day where you're speaking at 9 and networking at 6.

Same face. Different spray.

Pay attention to what your skin is telling you now

If the spray you've loved for years suddenly isn't working, you didn't forget how to do your makeup. Your skin may just be asking for a different job than it used to. Listen to it.

What TV taught me about setting spray

When you're doing multiple hits, there isn't always time to come back to the makeup room for a refresh between segments. Sometimes you have to touch yourself up on set, and that makeup has to last for hours. That's where ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn has earned its spot on TV. A lot of the anchors I work with love it. It's become their go-to for the face. And if you speak, present or spend a full day at a conference, you're doing your own version of multiple hits.

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless is the other one I keep close. We use it a lot for weddings, and I use it on set too, because it takes the powdery look down. The cameras have changed. There was a time we could use MAC Studio Fix Powder and nobody could tell. In HD and now 4K, you can see heavy makeup. But a lot of today's skin-forward makeup has the opposite problem: it gives nice coverage, and then it can look wet on set. So we're always looking for the balance.

The camera reads texture. Too much powder looks heavy. Too much glow looks wet. The right spray is how you land in between.

Here's what that taught me: the camera reads texture. Too much powder looks heavy, and too much glow looks wet. The right spray is how you land in between.

The other lesson: setting spray is the finish, not the fix. Under studio lights, shine still gets handled with powder and blotting, and spray goes on after. If you're on camera a lot, whether that's Zoom calls, presentations, panels, a podcast or your own content, keep that order.

What's actually in my kit

If you have a really good kit, I don't think there's one setting spray for all. You need at least a couple. Especially at a wedding, right? You've got different ages, different skin tones and different skin types all in one bridal suite. But the key is longevity. Whatever I'm using, it all has to last.

Match the spray to the moment: Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless for weddings and big nights, ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn for stage and camera, L'Oréal Infallible for long days and heat

So when I know I'm doing multiple faces, whether that's a wedding, a convention or being on the road during election season, I carry travel sizes of a couple of different types. That way I'm ready for whoever sits in my chair. You can do the same thing at home: one melt spray for everyday, one lock spray for the big days.

For the guys

Don't sleep on setting spray for the men in your life. ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn and L'Oréal Infallible are both really good for men's grooming. A light mist after moisturizer helps cut shine without looking like makeup. Think headshots, his wedding day, a big presentation or any time he's on camera.

How to use setting spray

How to use setting spray in five steps: shake it well, close eyes and mouth, check the distance, mist lightly, hands off for 30 seconds
  1. Shake it well first.

  2. Close your eyes, and your mouth while you're at it.

  3. Check the distance on your bottle. Charlotte Tilbury says about 6 to 8 inches from your face. ONE/SIZE says 10 to 12, and L'Oréal says 12.

  4. Mist lightly in a circle over your whole face. You're misting, not watering a plant.

  5. Let it dry on its own. Hands down. No patting. Give it about 30 seconds before you move on.

For midday, keep a mini in your bag. Blot first, touch up, then a quick mist.
